Mattresses by size

Full and twin mattresses in El Paso: the right size for kids, guests and small rooms

Not every bed in the house needs to be a queen. A child's first big-kid bed, the guest room that gets used three weekends a year, the first apartment near Fort Bliss, the bunk beds in a shared room: these are full and twin jobs. At Snooze Mattress + Wellness on Gateway Blvd W in El Paso we fit the smaller sizes the same way we fit a king, because a growing back on the wrong mattress is still the wrong mattress.

Twin, twin XL and full: the dimensions

A twin is 38 inches wide by 75 long, the standard for children's beds, bunk beds, daybeds and a single guest bed. A twin XL keeps the width and adds five inches of length, 38 by 80, which is the dorm standard and the size that suits a tall teenager or an adult sleeping alone; two twin XLs make a split king. A full, also called a double, is 54 by 75: comfortable for one adult or a teenager who wants room to turn, tight for two.

Twin and full mattresses go up any staircase and into any room, and they are the easiest to move again later, which matters in a child's room that will be rearranged more than once.

Mattresses for children and teenagers

A child does not need the most expensive bed on the floor; they need the right support for a light body, a surface that holds up to being jumped on, and a protector. Snooze-O-Pedic, made for Snooze with memory-foam pressure relief over pocketed coils, is the natural place to start, especially for a teenager who is already complaining about mornings. Pair it with a waterproof, breathable mattress protector from the store; in a child's room it is not optional.

Guest rooms and first apartments

A guest bed is slept on rarely but judged every time. A full or a queen in a hybrid from Sealy or Beautyrest gives visitors a bed that feels like a hotel without being the most expensive thing in the house. For a first apartment, a full on a simple frame is the practical size: it fits a small bedroom with a desk, it moves in a pickup, and it can become the guest bed later.

Full and twin on adjustable bases

Twin XL is the size adjustable bases are made around, which is why it is one half of every split king. A twin XL on a single adjustable base is a good set-up for one person who reads in bed, has reflux or snores. Fulls and standard twins fit a smaller range of bases; a Sleep Coach can tell you which of the models on the floor are available in those sizes.
